Things To Do

On the Marquesas Islands

The options of things to do in the Marquesas Islands range from extreme adventure to relaxing on the beach. Whatever option you choose to do is guaranteed to be an adventure.

Rent a car and take a road trip around Ua Huka, a lesser-known gem of the Marquesas Islands, home to numerous archaeological sites with original petroglyphs and stone statues you won’t want to miss. You could also take a day trip to Hiva Oa and walk along the black sand beach in Atuona Bay, then stop at the Tahuatae island, the smallest inhabited island in the archipelago. We recommend visiting the island of Nuku Hiva, the largest of the Marquesas Islands. Herman Melville famously wrote about his experience in the eastern part of the island, so you know it is a must-see. When you are there, check out the Vaipo Waterfall, the tallest waterfall in The Islands of Tahiti.

Marquesas Islands People

Marquesans are revered as the finest craftsmen in French Polynesia. Their creations include carvings, intricate tattoos, and even traditional jewelry.  The locals are proud to share the history and beauty of the land with visitors. The Marquesan iIslanders inhibit 6 of the 12 islands within the archipelago known as Marquesas Islands. To truly get a sense of the culture, we suggest having a local guide to show you around the islands, get a local’s stories on the history of their ancestors and to see some breathtaking spots that only a true local to the area would know.
