Island hopping

Getting from one island to another is fast and easy. Two domestic airlines, Air Tahiti and Air Moana, fly several times a day to the most popular islands. There is a ferry service several times a day betweent Tahiti and Moorea and 2 or 3 times a week between Tahiti and the other Society Islands, where two passenger-carrying cargo vessels also sail 3 times a week. Passenger/cargo vessels sail to the Marquesas Islands and the Austral Islands every two weeks and to Mangareva in the Gambier Islands once a month.

Inter island air travel

Air Tahiti has a regular service to 47 islands and atolls. Air Moana flies to six destinations: Raiatea, Bora Bora, Rangiroa, Nuku Hiva and Hica Oa. The baggage limit on both airlines is 50 lbs and divers are allowed 11 lbs extra. For more information: www.airtahiti.pf or www.airmoana.pf

Inter island sea transport

The most popular means of getting from one island to the next is by plane, but there is also the possibility of sea travel to many destinations.
Between Tahiti and the other Society Islands (Huahine, Raiatea, Taha’a, Bora Bora) there are 2 or 3 sailings per week:

There are also passenger carrying cargo vessels which sail to The Leeward Islands, the Tuamotu Islands, the Gambier Islands, the Marquesas Islands and the Austral Islands from Tahiti.

Between Tahiti and her sister island Moorea there is a ferry service 10 times a day. The crossing takes about half an hour and is used by the inhabitants of Moorea who work in Tahiti. The view of the coasts of Tahiti and Moorea during the short voyage is amgnificent, and in the right season, you can often spot humpback whales, which visit French Polynesia each year to give birth and nurture their young.

The ferry is the most economical option, with a travel time of about 4 hours. To travel between Tahiti and Moorea, you can take the Terevau and Aremiti ferries. Then, from the Papeete ferry terminal, you have the choice between the Apetahi Express and the Vaearai to connect Tahiti to Bora Bora.
